Body Don’t check myspace very often, and just noticed my latest blog entry.  Glad I put stuff about our Allagash canoe trip.  It turned out to be our last trip with John Kidder, who died shortly after quite suddenly and unexpectedly.  He was  a great guy, a great source of advice, and an all-around handy man to know, and I think of him a lot and miss him still.

Body {2014 note – lost the pictures}  I just got back from a week canoeing the Allagash in northern Maine.  We left Monday from Fitchburg, stayed overnight in Millinocket ME, then Tuesday drove to Fort Kent. ME,which is about as far north as you can go in the US.

Then Lionel, who works for Norman L’Italien at Pelletier Campground, drove us to Bissonnette Bridge (another three hours into the Maine woods!) where we put in with our three canoes.

Not really a bridge but where a bridge used to be, it’s downstream of Churchill Lake and below MOST of the Chase rapids, but hotdamn enough of those damn rapids to scare the bejeeziz out of all of us! Three canoes fully loaded with our gear dodging (and bouncing off) of scary rocks and coming too close to tipping for my taste!Â

Of course, by the time we got in the water it was 4pm or so, and already the sun was kinda low in the sky.  So after negotiating the rapids we came upon a campground, but it was taken by others.  So we kept going another mile and stayed at Chisolm Brook campsite.

This is all private property, managed by a consortium of timber companies who staff entrance points and collect $8/day per person for the privilege of using these campgrounds. They each had a picnic table, a horizontal ridge pole over the table where you can drape a tarp if you got one, and pit toilets. Â

Fortunately, my partners come well prepared.  John Kidder is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to outdoor dining.  We ate well.  I gained 5 lbs on this trip!

The second night we stayed at Long Lake Dam campground, where we had to portage across the remnant of a dam. So it was handy to unload the canoe upstream of the dam, and carry the empty canoe downstream below the campsite, and reload it in the morning.  We were carrying lots of weight, including at least a case of beer and 6 2.5gal water containers.

We stayed at Round Pond Rips the third night and a final night @ Cunliffe Depot (see picture of my tent site below.  Note the Allagash stretching out in the background.  We had two days of miserable wind and rain in our faces, but not all day, and we had two gorgeous days and one fair to middlin, so all in all I’d day we made out OK.

A splendid time was had by all!  Jack, Jim, David, Larry, Bill, John – what a crew!

I have much more free time now that I’m not working for the City.  Over thirty years in Fitchburg MA working for the public, 27.333 years with the city in several, increasingly responsible positions.  I’ve had my city email account for almost as long as there’s been email, and I was locked out of it following my “meeting” with the Mayor, but it’s not blocked!  So everyone trying to get hold of me must wonder why I’m not responding!  That blows.

Curiously, I’m not bitter as much as I’m concerned.  I hope the projects I was working on happen.  I’m perfectly willing to help or answer questions. In fact, I sent the DPW Director an explanatory mail about what had to be done with the EECBG Program.  Also, I told Sue in Payroll that the Treasurer, who is also the acting Community Development Director, can call me with questions any time.  So far, I haven’t heard anything, but I’m sure it’s nothing they can’t figure out if they have the time.

I always did my best and always acted in what I felt was the best interest of the people of Fitchburg. And still Fitchburg’s always been seen as going down the tubes!  Well, it’s no longer my responsibility or my fault! Think how much worse things would be if I hadn’t been around!

I never got to reflect on my accomplishments, except in a defensive way. What would I have done differently? I heard a lot that I didn’t toot my own horn enough.  I just always felt it was unseemly – that doing a good job is enough.

I have no regrets.  The CofF has been very good to me.  I made a pretty good salary at the end, I’ll get a little retirement come July, and I got my vacation and personal days paid to me when I left. Just not sure what I’m going to do now.

Body Second day of the power failure – the only thing working is my cell phone, and I left it in the car, charging.  I wake up and realize it, so I get out of bed to get it.  Mind you, I’m in my underwear and the house is 48 degrees or something.  So I run out to the garage to get my phone in the middle of the night and grab my phone, and run to go back in, and THE DOOR TO THE HOUSE IS LOCKED.  Because of the power failure, our automatic garage doors are unlocked and open, so my daughter, in a paranoid state, locks the door to the garage, which is never locked otherwise, and apparently doesn’t unlock when used.  So I’m outside in a freezing cold garage in my friggin’ underwear, and I’m beating on the door, and of course no one can hear me.  So thank God when I used the cell phone I’m holding in my hand to call Robin, she heard and she came down and let me in.  Or that would have really sucked!  More than that whole ice storm experience sucked.  Which was a lot.

Body We lost heat on New Year’s Day, rather soon after our dreadful loss of power and heat experience.  Called a plumber who fiddled and diddled and thought he had it fixed.  And it was, until today.  So I called Unitil, who our plumber had suggested because he thought they would have parts in stock on a Sunday or Holiday.  Well, the Unitil guy did the same fiddling, and couldn’t fix it, and sure as hell didn’t have any parts on him.  So it’s so cold I can barely type.  This sucks.  he’s coming back tomorrow to replace a part, and that better work!  We’ve had a lot of trouble with this boiler.

Amusing ice storm story – We stayed in a hotel for six days, and with some friends for one day, and here in a cold house for a night.  But on the night we stayed with friends, Robin had to work late, so elected to come home to stay that night rather than wake our friends after midnight.  The hot water worked, as did the stove top, so she figured she could tough it out in a 42 degree house.  Well, she wore seven layers of clothing and every blanket she could find in bed, and still was cold.  Then she made the mistake of taking a shower the next morning!  It’s funny to hear her tell the story, but suffice it to say she wouldn’t take a shower again in a 42 degree Fahrenheit house!

Thoughts about the Ice Storm

Subject:December adventures

PostedDate1/3/2009 4:11:00 AM

So Thursday evening, December 11th, Robin and I drove to Gomes Package store to buy a bunch of wine for our office party – scheduled for the next evening.  The weather was weird.  The trees were getting icy, but the ground was just wet – not really slippery.  But it apparently was at just the right temperature to coat the branches with ice.  It was 7:30pm, we were dodging down branches on old Rindge Road, so we went back home on John Fitch Highway, and damn near lost a windshield to a tree that had bent down over the travel lane in the dark.

At 3am is when all hell broke loose.  It had been continuing to rain and freeze, and a huge branch came off our tree, grazed our house on the way down, and ripped our power line off the house.  The whole family was awakened.  I walked around the house with a flashlight to see the damage, and all around me I could hear cracking and breaking limbs, and I thought “holy sheet – I’m gonna get killed out here!”  We went back to bed, and couldn’t sleep because of all the tree limbs snapping and cracking all around us.  We were just waiting to hear one hit the house.

The next morning, we awakened and looked outside at vegetative carnage.  Branches and trees everywhere we looked, wires down everywhere – every street blocked.  Fortunately, our cell phones worked fine.  Around 11am I dodged trees and drove over wires to go to City Hall to work.  For the next 8 days I helped at the Emergency Operations Center to input data and make maps for the residents of the shelters and for the DPW crews to target their efforts in removing debris from the streets. Weekdays and weekends – everyday.

We were without power until Monday, December 22nd – a total of 11 days.  We got cable and phone & Internet back Sunday, December 28th.  I lost two DVD players – somehow either the generator or the flash from the outage killed them both stone cold dead.

We got a generator after a week and a day without power (Friday) and Oh My Gawd am I glad I did.  We got it hooked up just as the snow started flying bringing a foot of snow, which was followed by bitterly cold temperatures that would have for sure frozen pipes.  The temperature in our house dropped to 37 degrees as it was.  Our neighbors across the street (with young children!) toughed it out the whole time with a fire place, and their house got down to 33 degrees!  I need to ask them if they lost pipes.

We went and got Megan on Saturday, the day after we got the generator, so she never got to experience a really cold house.  Although I couldn’t get it started one day when it ran out of gas and Megan and I ended up dragging it through the snow and inside the family room so it would warm up (as the house got cold) and the temp in the house dropped to the 50s.  And she sure got to see her snow! She doesn’t get any snow in England.

Just got back from helping my sister out in Montana with my twin brother.  Cold, rainy, foggy – not the best weather.  All these snow capped peaks around us and most of the time we couldn’t see them.  But sometimes we could, and that was cool.  Besides we spent most of the time helping my sister dispose of Anna Mork’s estate.  Three days at an outdoor garage sale!
